The update will download and install in the background while you use your PC to do other things. The installer will check to make sure you have enough disk space, that your apps and devices will work with Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, and that you have all the required updates. In some cases, the installer might find something you need to take care of before you can continue installing the update. If so, you'll see a message telling you what you need to do.
At the screen that asks what you want to do, select Upgrade this PC now and click Next. The Window 10 download then kicks off. Make sure the edition of Windows 10 that you want to install matches the one for Windows 8.1 (Home vs. Pro, for example), then accept the license terms.
Select or confirm the language, OS edition, and architecture (32- or 64-bit). The next screen then asks which media you want to use. Select ISO file, then click Next. Choose a location on your PC to download the ISO file and click Save. After the ISO file is generated, click Finish.
In File Explorer, navigate to the folder where you downloaded the file. Right-click on it and select Mount from the menu. From the mounted files, double-click setup.exe to begin the upgrade. A screen for installing Windows 10 will appear.
Click Change how Windows Setup downloads updates, then select the Not right now option and click Next. Review the license terms and click Accept. At the Ready to install screen, confirm that the upgrade will install Windows 10 and keep your personal files and apps. Click Install and allow the upgrade to proceed.
Open File Explorer and navigate to the folder where you downloaded the file. Right-click the downloaded ISO file and select Mount, then double-click the setup.exe file to begin setup.
To upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 if you have a product key from Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, download the Windows Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft website, and then follow the prompts to upgrade your PC. Other options include purchasing a new PC with Windows 10 installed or buying Windows directly from Microsoft.
To upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Pro, head to the Microsoft Store and purchase and download the Pro version directly from Microsoft. If you already have a Windows 10 Pro license key, go to Start > Settings > Updates and Security > Activation, select Change Product Key, and then enter your Windows Pro product key.
I wrote and published the first version of this post in early 2017, shortly after Microsoft's initial free upgrade offer ended. When I downloaded the Windows 10 upgrade tool and ran it on an old Windows 7 PC, I fully expected that the upgrade would fail activation and I'd be asked for a product key.
With those preliminaries out of the way, go to the Download Windows 10 webpage and click the Download now button. After the download completes, double-click the executable file to run the Media Creation Tool.
If you've downloaded the Media Creation Tool on the machine you plan to upgrade, and you plan to upgrade that PC and only that PC, you can choose the Upgrade This PC Now option. That option installs the most recent version of Windows 10. It typically takes about an hour, depending on your hardware. (Having an SSD as your system drive is the best way to speed up the process.)
If you know you'll want to upgrade to Windows 10 on more than one PC, or if you just want more flexibility in the event that the instant upgrade fails, choose the second option and save the installation files to a USB drive or as an ISO file. The download takes a little time but when it's complete, you can run the Windows Setup program manually to install Windows 10 on any PC running any supported Windows version (sorry, this won't work with PCs running Windows Vista or Windows XP). The exact steps depend on which download option you chose:

The Microsoft Store description didn't explain if it'll still be possible to buy new PCs with Windows 10 installed by original equipment manufacturers (with an OEM license) after the Jan. 31 date. Its statement seems to just apply to the downloadable OS product. For the various ways to buy Windows, see this PCWorld.com article.

Windows 8 is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. It was released to manufacturing on August 1, 2012; it was subsequently made available for download via MSDN and TechNet on August 15, 2012,[6] and later to retail on October 26, 2012.[7]
The build was released for download later that day in 32-bit and 64-bit variants, plus a special 64-bit variant which included SDKs and developer tools (Visual Studio Express and Expression Blend) for developing Metro-style apps.[28] The Windows Store was also announced during the presentation, but was not available in this build.[29][30] According to Microsoft, there were about 535,000 downloads of the developer preview within the first 12 hours of its release.[31] Originally set to expire on March 11, 2012, in February 2012 the Developer Preview's expiry date was changed to January 15, 2013.[32]
On February 29, 2012, Microsoft released Windows 8 Consumer Preview, the beta version of Windows 8, build 8250. Alongside other changes, the build brought over the big change from build 8195: removing the Start button from the taskbar for the first time in a public build since its debut on Windows 95; according to Windows manager Chaitanya Sareen, the Start button was removed to reflect their view that on Windows 8, the desktop was an app itself, and not the primary interface of the operating system.[34][35] Windows president Steven Sinofsky said more than 100,000 changes had been made since the developer version went public.[35] The day after i
